Abstract: This paper introduces Professor LAO Changhui's clinical experience in treating depression syndrome with a combination of Chinese and western medicine. Professor LAO Changhui believes that the cause of depression syndrome is primarily due to the deficiency of the kidney's essence and qi, with emotional distress as the triggering factor. The disease is located in the liver and spleen, and with prolonged illness,it can affect the heart and kidney, presenting a syndrome of deficiency in the root and excess in the branch. The key to diagnosis is the main complaint and tongue coating. The treatment involves a combination of Chinese and western medicine throughout the process, with both elimination and reinforcement. In the early stages or mild cases, the treatment mainly focuses on soothing the liver and relieving depression, with modifications to the main prescription of Xiaoyao Powder;in the middle stages, the treatment mainly focuses on mildly regulating cold and heat, yin and yang, with modified Banxia Xiexin Decoction as the main prescription; in the later stages, the treatment focuses on tonifying qi and replenishing blood, supplementing and boosting the liver and kidney, and protecting the root, with Guipi Decoction or Shenqi Pills as the main prescription. The aim of Chinese medicine treatment is to strengthen the root and reduce the adverse effects caused by western medicine, with the treatment plan of oral administration with western medicine throughout the process. The combination of the two improves patient compliance and clinical efficacy.
