Abstract： Objective： To observe the clinical effect of Huoxue Quban Decoction combined with Atorvastatin Calcium Tablets for carotid atherosclerosis plaques (CAAP) of binding of phlegm and stasis type. Methods：A total of 86 CAAP patients of binding of phlegm and stasis type were randomly divided into the control group and the treatment group， with 43 cases in each group， using a random number table method. The control group was treated with Atorvastatin Calcium， and the treatment group was treated with Huoxue Quban Decoction combined with Atorvastatin Calcium. After six months of treatment， the clinical efficacy， traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome scores， carotid intima-media thickness (IMT)，plaque areas，blood lipid levels [triglycerides (TG)，total cholesterol (TC)，high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)， and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)]， as well as the levels of highsensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results： The total effective rate was 95.35% in the treatment group， which was higher than that of 79.07% in the control group (P＜0.05). After treatment，the TCM syndrome scores in the two groups were declined when compared with those before treatment，and the scores in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group (P＜0.05). After treatment， the IMT in the two groups were thinner than those before treatment (P＜0.05)，and plaque areas in the two groups were reduced when compared with those before treatment (P＜0.05)，and the IMT value and plaque area in the treatment group were less than those in the control group (P＜0.05). After treatment，the levels of TC，TG，and LDL-C in the two groups were declined when compared with those before treatment (P＜0.05)， and the levels of HDL-C were increased when compared with those before treatment (P＜0.05)；the levels of TC，TG，and LDL-C in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group (P＜0.05)， and the HDL-C level was higher than that in the control group (P＜0.05). After treatment，the hs-CRP levels in both groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P＜0.05)，and the hs-CRP level in the treatment group was lower than that in the control group (P＜0.05). During the treatment period， there were no significant abnormalities in coagulation function， blood and urine routine， and liver and kidney function tests in the two groups. One patient in the control group experienced muscle pain， and symptoms improved after discontinuation of medication. Conclusion： Huoxue Quban Decoction combined with Atorvastatin Calcium has a definite effect on the treatment of CAAP. It can further alleviate symptoms and signs， reduce the thickness of the carotid intima-media layer，reduce plaque area，regulate blood lipid levels，and alleviate inflammatory reactions.
