Abstract:Objective:To observe the clinical effect of electroacupuncture combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and motortherapy on chronic ankle instability (CAI). Methods:A total of 96 CAI patients were randomly divided into the study group and the control group, with 48 cases in each group. The control group was treated with motortherapy and NMES,and the study group was additionally treated with electroacupuncture based on the treatment of the control group. After eight weeks of treatment, the clinical effects, scores of Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT), Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Socieyt (AOFAS) score balance, peak torque values of flexors and extensors of ankle at different angles in both groups were observed. Results:The total effective rate was 95.83% in the study group and 83.33% in the control group, the difference being significant (P< 0.05). After treatment, the scores of CAIT,FAAM-Activities of Daily Life (FAAM-ADL) and FAAM-Sport in both groups were up-regulated when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the above three scores in the study group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgergy (AOFAS) scores in both groups were elevated when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the AOFAS score in the study group was higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the length of X-direction shift trace and the length of Y-direction shift trace of gravity in the two groups were shortened when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the above two indexes in the study group were shorter than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the peak torque values of flexors and extensors of ankle at such different angles as 60°/s plantar flexion,120°/s plantar flexion,60°/s dorsal extension and 120°/s dorsal extension in both groups were increased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the above four values in the study group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Electroacupuncture combined with NMES and motortherapy has a significant curative effect on CAI,which can greatly improve the joint function, stability and muscle strength of foot and ankle.
