Abstract： Objective： To observe the clinical effect of Shenmai Runmu Prescription combined with Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drops on meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) induced xerophthalmia. Methods：A total of 104 cases of patients with MGD induced xerophthalmia were randomly divided into the combination group and the western medicine group according to random number table method，with 52 cases in each group. The western medicine group was treated with Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drops，and the combination group was treated with Shenmai Runmu Prescription combined with Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drops. Both groups were treated for four weeks. The clinical effects and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups；traditional Chinese medicine syndrome scores，Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores， tear film stability and MGD degree in the two groups were compared before and after treatment. Results： The total effective rate was 94.23% in the combination group，higher than that of 78.85% in the western medicine group (P＜0.05). After treatment，traditional Chinese medicine syndrome scores and OSDI scores in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P＜0.05)，and the scores in the combination group were lower than those in the western medicine group (P＜0.05). After treatment， the corneal fluorescence staining test (FL) scores in the two groups were declined when compared with those before treatment (P＜0.05)， and the score in the combination group was lower than that in the western medicine group (P＜0.05). The Schirmer's test (SIT) and tear film break-up time (BUT) in the two groups were increased when compared with those before treatment (P＜0.05)， and the above indexes in the combination group were higher than those in the western medicine group (P＜0.05). After treatment， MGD degree in the combination group was lower than that in the western medicine group (P＜0.05). There was no significant difference being found in the comparison of the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P＞0.05). Conclusion： Shenmai Runmu Prescription combined with Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drops has a good effect on MGD induced xerophthalmia， which can further reduce symptoms and improve tear film stability，with good safety.
