Medicinals with high frequency of use included Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Pinelliae Rhizoma, Poria, Armeniacae Semen Amarum, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Astragali Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, etc. The main meridian entries were the lung, spleen, and stomach meridians. Conclusion:The Chinese medicine treatment of COPD complicated with respiratory failure is based on tonifying qi, supplemented by the method of banking up earth to generate metal, combined with medicinals for cough relief, phlegm reduction, asthma relief, heat clearing, and blood activating. It emphasizes the elimination of pathological products such as phlegm, blood stasis, and fluid retention. Such treatment reflects the Chinese medicine theoretical idea of reinforcing healthy qi and dispelling pathogens and treating both the root and branch of diseases.
