Abstract: This paper summarizes the clinical experience of Professor GU Yun, a famous Chinese medicine doctor in Shanghai,on the staging treatment of community-acquired pneumonia caused by viral and bacterial infections. Professor GU believes that phlegm, toxin, blood stasis, and deficiency are the key pathogenesis of the disease. He categorizes the disease into three stages based on the onset and symptoms, each requiring a different treatment approach. In the early stage when toxin invades the lung, the treatment should focus on detoxifying and resolving phlegm, and diffusing the lung and relieving cough; the chosen prescription should be modified Qingre Jiedu Decoction. In the middle stage when phlegm and stasis obstruct the lung, the treatment should aim to fortify the spleen and dissolve phlegm, dissolve stasis and unblock the collaterals; the treatment involves a combination of modified Shenling Baizhu Powder and Taohong Siwu Decoction. In the recovery stage when the lung, spleen, and kidney are deficient, the treatment should focus on supplementing and boosting essential qi,as well as invigorating blood; the prescription used is modified Sijunzi Decoction combined with Liuwei Dihuang Pills. Professor GU emphasizes the advantages of Chinese medicine in antiviral treatment, the importance of stage-based replenishment, reinforcing healthy qi and dispelling pathogen, and the application of blood-activating and stasis-resolving therapy throughout the treatment process.
