Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Danggui Dihuang Decoction combined with acupuncture on points at sciatic nerve on lumbocrural pain in senile patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Methods: A total of 92 senile LDH patients with lumbocrural pain were selected as the study subjects and were divided into the reference group and the treatment group according to the random number table method, with 46 cases in each group. The reference group received routine rehabilitation measures and Celecoxib Capsules, and the treatment group received additional treatment with Danggui Dihuang Decoction combined with acupuncture on points at sciatic nerve based on the treatment of the reference group. Both groups were treated for two weeks. The clinical effects after treatment, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores of lumbocrural pain, the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) scores, lumbar range of motion, and levels of interleukin-23 (IL-23), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in serum before and after treatment were compared between the two groups. Results: The total effective rate was 93.48% in the treatment group, higher than that of 76.09% in the reference group (P<0.05). After treatment, the VAS scores of the waist and legs in the two groups were decreased (P<0.05),and the scores in the treatment group were lower than those in the reference group (P<0.05). After treatment, the JOA scores in the two groups were increased (P<0.05),and the score in the treatment group was higher than that in the reference group (P<0.05). After treatment, the maximum ranges of motion of lumbar flexion, extension, left and right rotation were increased in the two groups (P< 0.05), and the ranges in the treatment group were greater than those in the reference group (P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of IL-23,PGE2,and COX-2 in serum in the two groups were decreased (P< 0.05), and the levels in the treatment group were lower than those in the reference group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Danggui Dihuang Decoction combined with acupuncture on points at sciatic nerve has a significant clinical effect in treating lumbocrural pain in senile LDH patients, which can reduce the pain degree, improve lumbar function and mobility, and inhibit inflammatory responses.
