Abstract：The paper introduces the clinical experience of Professor MA Jipei in treating fluid retention due to diabetic nephropathy at middle and late stages based on syndrome differentiation. Professor MA Jipei believes that this disease is the syndrome of the deficiency in origin and excess in superficiality，with spleen-kidney yang deficiency being the root and damp-turbidity，blood stasis and qi stagnation being the branch. The treatment of it emphasizes on supplementing the kidney and fortifying the spleen，warming yang and promoting urination as the major methods， and takes into account removing dampness and directing turbidity downward，invigorating blood and dissolving stasis，and regulating and freeing the qi movement. In addition，with the application of Chinese medicine fumigation prescriptions，the circulation of lower limbs can be improved，and both the internal and external can be treated simultaneously. This indicates that the therapies complement each other.
