Abstract： Objective： To observe the clinical effect of modified Suzi Jiangqi Decoction and Sanzi Yangqin Decoction combined with acupoint application for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) complicated with chronic respiratory failure with turbid phlegm obstructing the lung syndrome. Methods：A total of 84 patients with acute exacerbation of COPD complicated by chronic respiratory failure with phlegm obstructing the lung syndrome were selected and randomly divided into the study group and the control group according to the random number table method，with 42 cases in each group. The study group excluded 2 cases due to the lost of follow-up and ultimately included 40 cases. The control group was given routine symptomatic treatment. The study group was given modified Suzi Jiangqi Decoction and Sanzi Yangqin Decoction combined with acupoint application based on routine symptomatic treatment. Both groups were treated for 2 weeks. The clinical effects，traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) syndrome scores， COPD Assessment Test (CAT) scores， and lung function indicators were compared between two groups. Results： After treatment， the total effective rate was 95.00% in the study group， and 85.71% in the control group，there being no significant difference between the two groups (P＞0.05). After treatment， the TCM syndrome scores and CAT scores in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P＜0.05)，and the TCM syndrome score and CAT score in the study group were lower than those in the control group (P＜0.05). After treatment， the percentage of forced expiratory volume in one second to the predicted value(FEV1% pred)， maximum ventilation volume， and tidal volume in the two groups were increased when compared with those before treatment (P＜0.05). There was no significant difference being found in the comparison of the above lung function indicators between the two groups (P＞0.05). Conclusion：On the basis of routine symptomatic treatment，modified Suzi Jiangqi Decoction and Sanzi Yangqin Decoction combined with acupoint application can significantly alleviate the symptoms of patients with acute exacerbation of COPD complicated with chronic respiratory failure with turbid phlegm obstructing the lung syndrome.
