Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of the therapy of San'ao Tablets combined with Terbutaline on cough variant asthma. Methods: A total of 80 patients with cough variant asthma were selected as the study objects and randomly divided into the control group and the treatment group, with 40 cases in each group. The control group was given Terbutaline for treatment, and the treatment group was additionally treated with San'ao Tablets based on the treatment of the control group. The clinical effects, and the changes in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome scores, indexes of lung function, including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and peak expiratory volume (PEV),and inflammatory indicators, including the number of eosinophilic granulocytes, tumor necrosis factor- α (TNF- α) and interleukin- 4 (IL- 4), leicester cough questionnaire (LCQ) were observed before and after treatment in both groups. Results: The total effective rate was 95.00% in the treatment group and 75.00% in the control group, the difference being significant (P<0.05). After treatment, TCM syndrome scores of cough, scanty phlegm, throat itching and running nose in both groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the above scores in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of FVC,FEV1 and PFE in both groups were increased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), and the above indexes in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the number of eosinophilic granulocytes, and the levels of TNF- α and IL- 4 in both groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), and the above indexes in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of physiology, psychology and society and total scores in LCQ scale in both groups were increased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), and the scores of physiology and psychology and total scores in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05); there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of score of society between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: The therapy of San'ao Tablets combined with Terbutaline on cough variant asthma can significantly improve TCM syndrome, mitigate the inflammatory responses of the body, and enhance the lung function, mental state and quality of life of patients.
