Effect of Chinese Medicine Point Application on Gastrointestinal Dysfunction in Patients with Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Managed with Non-Invasive Ventilation
Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Chinese medicine point application on gastrointestinal dysfunction in patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) managed with non- invasive ventilation. Methods: A total of 88 AECOPD patients with gastrointestinal dysfunction who received non-invasive ventilation were selected as the study objects, and randomly divided into the control group and the observation group by envelope method, with 44 patients in each group. The control group was treated with conventional western medicine, and the observation group was additionally treated with herbal point application based on the treatment of the control group. Both groups were treated for seven days. The clinical effects, scores of Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) and the frequency of bowel sounds were compared between the two groups. Results: The total effective rate was 93.18% in the observation group and 77.27% in the control group, the difference being significant (P<0.05). Before treatment, there were no significant differences in the comparison of scores of abdominal pain, reflux, dyspepsia, diarrhea and constipation and total scores of GSRS between the two groups (P>0.05). After treatment, all the above scores in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and all the above scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference in the frequency of bowel sounds between the two groups (P>0.05). After three days and seven days of treatment, the frequency of bowel sounds in the two groups showed an increasing trend when respectively compared with that before treatment (P<0.05),and the frequency of bowel sounds in the observation group was higher than that in the control group at the same time point (P<0.05). Conclusion: The therapy of Chinese medicine point application combined with conventional treatment can improve clinical effect on AECOPD patients managed with non- invasive ventilation accompanied by gastrointestinal dysfunction, which can effectively reduce gastrointestinal symptoms and improve gastrointestinal function.
