Abstract： In his Si Sheng Xin Yuan (Abstract of the Four Sages Study)， HUANG Yuanyu of Qing Dynasty believed that cough is rooted in the lung and stomach， and deficiency of center qi and yang deficiency are the main pathogenesis of cough based on the qi movement theory of "Circular Flow of Qi". According to the pathogenesis，cough can be divided into wet cough and dry cough. It is advocated that acrid and warm Chinese herbs should be mainly used in its treatment and modified according to different syndromes，and the methods of releasing exterior，clearing lung fire and directing qi downward should be combined. His accademic ideology has guiding significance to the research and treatment of cough in later generations.
