Clinical Effect of Warming-Needle Moxibustion for Knee Osteoarthritis of Wind-Cold and Fixed Impediment Type and Its Effect on Levels of Serum Pain Mediators
Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of warming- needle moxibustion on knee osteoarthritis of wind- cold and fixed impediment type and its effects on levels of serum pain medicators. Methods: A total of 98 patients with knee osteoarthritis of wind- cold and fixed impediment type were randomly divided into two groups, with 49 cases in each group. The control group was given oral administration of Celecoxib Capsules, and the observation group was additionally treated with warmingneedle moxibustion based on the treatment of the control group. Before and after treatment, the scores of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain and Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome scores and levels of pain mediators, including serum prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), substance P (SP) and 5- hydroxytryptamine (5- HT) were compared between the two groups. Results: Before treatment, there was no significant difference being found in the comparisons of scores of WOMAC and VAS between the two groups (P>0.05);after treatment, the scores of WOMAC and VAS in both groups were decreased (P<0.05), and the above two scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of TCM syndrome scores of stiff joints, cold pain in joints and limited joint movement between the two groups (P>0.05); after treatment, the above three TCM syndrome scores in the two groups were decreased (P<0.05),and the above three TCM syndrome scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference being found in the comparisons of levels of serum PGE2,SP and 5-HT between the two groups (P>0.05); after treatment, the levels of serum PGE2, SP and 5- HT in both groups were decreased (P<0.05), and the above three levels in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion:Warming- needle moxibustion combined with Celecoxib Capsules for knee osteoarthritis of wind-cold and fixed impediment type can effectively decrease the levels of serum pain mediators, and significantly relieve the clinical symptoms of pain with better curative effect.
