Abstract： This paper introduces Prof. YANG Youfa's clinical experience in treating lumbar disc herniation from the phlegm-stasis theory based on syndrome differentiation. Prof. YANG believes that the important pathogenesis of lumbar disc herniation is kidney essence depletion and phlegm- stasis obstructing passages. Therefore，the treatment pays attention to dissolving phlegm and dispelling stasis， unblocking the impediment and cultivating the vital essence. The basic formula， Xiaohuoluo Pellets， is modified according to differentiating syndromes of “phlegm， stasis， cold and impediment”，“phlegm， stasis， heat and impediment”， and “phlegm， stasis， deficiency and impediment”. Patients with syndrome of “phlegm， stasis， cold and impediment” are additionally treated with Bushen Huoxue Decoction； patients with syndrome of “phlegm， stasis， heat and impediment” are additionally given Lianpu Decoction； patients with syndrome of “phlegm， stasis， deficiency and impediment” are additionally treated with Taohong Siwu Decoction. The authors flexibly applies the formulas according to the clinical practice，and this exerts a great therapeutic effect on patients.
