Abstract:Balance cupping is a therapy in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM),with basic theories of ying- yang theory, theory of meridian- collateral acupuncture points as well as course of meridian and collateral on the back and effects of commonly selected points. In this study, the published literature in English and Chinese involving the balance cupping therapy were retrieved and combed. The balance cupping techniques were summarized in terms of the theoretical basis, operation procedures and the essentials, point selection and point combination for retained cupping and the basis for evaluation of curative effect. Thus the specific operation procedures of balance cupping were developed; the principles of point combination were also made with the distribution of acupuncture point and triple energizers in the small of the back as the basis for point selection and cupping in line with syndrome differentiation; after slide cupping, the location, shape and color of plaque were observed to determine the location of disease, course of disease, disease type and curative effect, and the color of plaque due to cupping was analyzed to assist diagnosis and the evaluation of curative effect; the scale of TCM syndrome scores was established as the standard for determining the curative effect; the operation of balance cupping techniques was normalized and the theoretical basis was provided to promote the application of balance cupping therapy in clinical practice.
