Abstract： Objective： To observe the curative effect of acupuncture combined with Yishen Huoxue Decoction for lumbar spinal stenosis of liver- kidney deficiency type and its effect on inflammatory factors and pain mediators. Methods： A total of 92 cases of patients with lumbar spinal stenosis of liver- kidney deficiency type were selected and divided into the combination group and the western medicine group according to the random number table method，with 46 cases in each group. The western medicine group was treated with routine modern medical therapy，and the combination group was additionally treated with acupuncture combined with Yishen Huoxue Decoction based on western medicine treatment. Both groups were treated for one month. The clinical effects in the two groups were compared. Before and after treatment， the changes in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome scores， Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores of pain，intermittent claudication scores，Japanese Orthopaedic Association(JOA) scores and levels of inflammatory factors including interleukin-6 (IL-6)，interleukin-4 (IL-4) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in serum were compared between the two groups. Results：The clinical effect was 91.30% in the combination group and 76.09% in the western treatment group，the difference being significant (P＜0.05). After treatment，the scores of TCM syndromes including soreness and pain in waist and knee，cold waist and legs， intermittent claudication， mental fatigue and disinclination to talk， and pale complexion in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment；all the above 5 TCM syndrome scores in the combination group were lower than those in the western medicine group (P＜0.05). After treatment，VAS scores in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment， and JOA scores were increased， differences being significant (P＜0.05)； VAS score in the combination treatment group was lower than those in the western medicine group，and JOA score was higher than that in the western medicine group，differences being significant (P＜0.05). After treatment，the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in serum were decreased when compared with those before treatment，and the levels of IL-4 in serum were increased，differences being significant (P＜0.05)；the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in serum in the combination group were lower than those in the western medicine group， and the level of IL- 4 in serum was higher than that in the western medicine group， differences being significant (P＜0.05). Conclusion：Acupuncture combined with Yishen Huoxue Decoction has a significant curative effect in the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis of liver-kidney deficiency type，which can relieve the clinical symptoms such as lumbago and intermittent claudication，improve the lumbar function，and regulate the imbalance between inflammatory response transmitters and anti-inflammatory factors.
