Abstract: The paper introduces the clinical experience of chief Chinese medicine practitioner CHU Shuixin in treating insomnia with the theory of conducting yang entering yin. CHU holds that the pathogenesis of insomnia mainly lies in yin-yang disharmony and the failure of yang entering yin. The most closely related viscera and bowels are the spleen and stomach, and the heart and kidney. The failure of yang entering yin can be caused by spleen-stomach disharmony, dysfunction of ascending and descending qi movement,non- interaction between the heart and the kidney, and unordered exiting and entering qi movement, thus inducing the occurrence of insomnia. Therefore, the ultimate goal of treatment is to conduct yang entering yin; the treatment methods include fortifying the spleen to promote the ascent, harmonizing the stomach to help the descent, strengthening the heart to advance exit, and nourishing the kidney to contribute entering. As for the prescriptions and medication, nine couplet medicinals that can conduct yang entering yin are usually used in clinical syndrome differentiation and treatment, namely stirbake Ziziphi Spinosae Semen and Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, calcine Os Draconis and calcine Concha Ostreae, calcine Haematitum and calcine Magnetitum, Coptidis Rhizoma and Cinnamomi Cortex, Pinelliae Rhizoma and husked sorghum,stir-bake Hordei Fructus Germinatus and stir-bake Oryzae Fructus Germinatus, Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma and Polygalae Praeparata Radix, Astragali Radix, Cinnamomi Ramulus and Paeoniae Radix, and Caulis Polygoni Multiflori, Albiziae Cortex and Sclerotium Poriae Pararadicis.
