Abstract： Objective： To observe the clinical effect of modified Tongxie Yaofang combined with moxibustion on medicinals for diarrhea- predominant irritable bowel syndrome(IBS- D) with the liver qi attacking the spleen syndrome and its effects on inflammatory factors. Methods： A total of 100 cases of IBS-D patients with liver qi attacking the spleen syndrome were randomly divided into the control group and the observation group，with 50 cases in each group. The control group was given the oral administration of live combined bifidobacterium， lacto bacillus and enterococcus powder， and the observation group was treated with modified Tongxie Yaofang combined with moxibustion on medicinals at Shenque point(RN 8). After six- week treatment， clinical effects， scores of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS)，traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) syndrome scores，and levels of serum inflammatory factors including interleukin- 6(IL- 6) and tumor necrosis factor- α(TNF- α) in the two groups were observed and compared. Results：The total effective rate was 66.00% in the control group and 84.00% in the observation group， the difference being significant(P＜0.05). Before treatment， there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of IBS-SSS scores and TCM syndrome scores between the two groups(P＞ 0.05). After treatment，IBS- SSS scores and Chinese medicine syndrome scores in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment(P＜0.05)，and the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group(P＜0.05). Before treatment，there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of levels of IL- 6 and TNF- α between the two groups(P＞0.05). After treatment，levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment(P＜0.05)，and the two levels in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P＜0.05). Conclusion：Modified Tongxie Yaofang combined with moxibustion on medicinals for IBS-D with the liver qi attacking the spleen syndrome can effectively improve curative effects，clinical symptoms and TCM syndromes，and alleviate body inflammatory responses.
