Abstract: This paper introduces the experience of Chen Xiabo in treating hyperthyroidism from tongue syndrome differentiation. Chen believes that the key pathogenesis of the disease is the failure of the liver governing the free flow of qi. The tongue belongs to the five zang organs, and the tongue side corresponds to the liver and gallbladder,so analyzing the disease from observing the tongue and treating hyperthyroidism from the tongue syndrome differentiation can play an important role. There are four types of syndromes of tongues, each with its own characteristics. The syndrome of constraint and stagnation of liver qi reflects in a dark tongue with thin and white coating;the syndrome of qi constraint transforming into fire reflects in a red tongue with yellow coating; the syndrome of yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity reflects in a red tongue with little coating or without coating;and the syndrome of deficiency of both qi and yin or combined with phlegm and stasis reflects in a dark red or dark purplish tongue with little coating or greasy coating whose sides have teeth marks or bruises and whose beneath collaterals are bluish violet. Chen points out that the syndromes of hyperthyroidism is numerous and complicated, and the course of it can be effectively shortened by differentiating the tongue syndromes and referring to four diagnosis methods to judge the changes of the condition and adjusting the medication in time.
