Abstract:This paper introduces Professor WANG Xinhua's experience of using couplet medicinals and triple medicinals compatibility in the treatment of chronic cough. Professor WANG holds that medicines of couplet medicinals and triple medicinals compatibility can complement each other under the condition of correct syndrome differentiation and proper combination. Common couplet medicinals include Flos Inulae- Haematitum, Fructus Xanthii- Flos Magnoliae, and Semen Coicis-Rhizoma Pinelliae;common triple medicinals compatibilities include Rhizoma Fagopyri Dibotryis-Herba Houttuyniaestir Radix Scutellariae,and Herba Spirodelae-Periostracum Cicada-Bombyx Batryticatus;all these herbal combinations have their own advantages. The combination of Flos Inulae-Haematitum can treat patients with qi rishing,and those with chronic cough induced by gastroesophageal reflux. Fructus Xanthii-Flos Magnoliae can be used for cough and expectoration caused by allergic rhinitis and postnasal drip syndrome, which reflects the idea of treating the lung and the nose simultaneously. Semen Coicis-Rhizoma Pinelliae is usually used for patients with cough and excessive phlegm,because it can dry dampness without any damage to fluid and eliminate the pathogenic factors without any damage to the healthy qi. Rhizoma Fagopyri Dibotryis-Herba Houttuyniae-stir Radix Scutellariae,known as “three Chinese medicines with strong effect in clearing the lung”,is usually used for the treatment of patients with cough and excessive yellow phlegm regardless of the course of the disease. Herba Spirodelae-Bombyx Batryticatus-Periostracum Cicada is applied for patients with symptoms of wind cough of Chinese medicine, including dry cough, dryness and itching of throat, cough induced by intolerable throat itching, the aggravation of cough by wind or stimulants,and frequent cough at night.
