Abstract：Cirrhotic ascites is a common clinical manifestation of liver cirrhosis. At present，its disease progression still cannot be effectively controlled by western medicine. From the perspective of the holism and syndrome differentiation and treatment，Chinese medicine has remarkable advantages in clinical effect and symptom relief. This paper summarizes the diagnosis and treatment of cirrhotic ascites in Chinese medicine from the aspects including etiology and pathogenesis， syndrome differentiation and treatment，famous practitioners and prescriptions and the combination of internal and external treatments of Chinese medicine. The deepening study on cirrhotic ascites in Chinese medicine has broken through the traditional understanding of tympanites， and the treatment of cirrhotic ascites by Chinese medicine does accord with the clinical practice and has good curative effect.
