Abstract: Diarrhea- predominant irritable bowel syndrome is a kind of intestinal dysfunction disease which seriously affects the quality of life and physical and mental health of patients, but there is no effective treatment at present. The theory of meridian sinew is an important part of the theory of meridians and collaterals in Chinese medicine. The meridian sinew has a close relationship with viscera and bowels. The dysfunction of meridian sinew can lead to diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. This paper first reviews the understanding of the theory of meridian sinew in ancient and modern literature. Besides, the etiology, pathogenesis and disease development law of diarrhea- predominant irritable bowel syndrome are discussed on a basis of the theory of meridian sinew of Chinese medicine and clinical practice. It is concluded that there are three stages of the disease, and the treatment priorities of each stage are “relaxing sinews”,“dissipate binds” and “warming meridians and nourishing sinews”. It is possible to find a new breakthrough point for the treatment of diarrheapredominant irritable bowel syndrome under the guidance of meridian sinew theory.
