Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of the therapy of Chinese medicine syndrome differentiation and nursing on elderly patients after appendectomy. Methods:A total of 136 elderly patients after appendectomy were randomly divided into two groups, 68 cases in each group. The control group was treated with interventions of western medicine, including conventional anti- inflammatory, fluid infusion, replenishing electrolytes and maintaining the acid- base balance. The treatment group was additionally treated with interventions of Chinese medicine according to syndrome differentiation based on the treatment of the control group, including oral administration of Chinese herbs, point application with Chinese herbal powder, auricular point application with beans and point pressing. The time of activity out of bed after appendectomy, length of hospital stay,Chinese medicine syndrome score, complication rate and satisfaction rate in the two groups were observed and compared. Results: The time of activity out of bed after appendectomy and length of hospital stay in the treatment group were significantly shortened when compared with those in the control group(P<0.05). The Chinese medicine syndrome scores in both groups were decreased after treatment, and the improvement of the score in the control group was superior to that in the treatment group, the difference being significant(P<0.05). The complication rate in the treatment group was decreased more significantly than that in the control group(P<0.05). The satisfaction rate in the treatment group was increased more significantly when compared with that in the control group, the difference being significant(P>0.05). Conclusion: The therapy of Chinese medicine syndrome differentiation and nursing has more significant therapeutic effect than western medicine alone in treating elderly patients after appendectomy, which is an individualized treatment.
