Abstract: Ulcerative colitis(UC) is a kind of chronic nonspecific intestinal inflammatory disease with unknown etiology, which occurs in colonic mucosa. It has the characteristic of attacks alternating with relief and belongs to the category of dysentery in Chinese medicine. Western medicine adopts salicylic acid preparation,immunosuppressant,glucocorticoid and biological preparation for treatment,but with long course of treatment and many adverse reactions. Chinese medicine adopts internal and external therapies in treating UC based on syndrome differentiation, which is economical and practical, with definite curative effect and few adverse reactions. Classical Chinese herbal prescriptions such as Wumei pills,Shaoyao tang, Banxia Xiexin tang and Baitouweng tang,acupuncture and moxibustion therapy including moxibustion and point application, as well as Chinese herbal enema have significant curative effect. The authors made a summary on the related literature about Chinese medicine for UC in recent years so as to provide reference for treating UC.
