Abstract：Objective：To observe the clinical effect of Haitongpi tang for knee osteoarthritis(KOA). Methods：A total of 90 cases of KOA patients were randomly divided into the control group and the treatment group，45 cases in each group. The control group was treated with sodium hyaluronate for intra- articular injection， and the treatment group was additionally treated with Haitongpi tang based on the treatment of the control group. Before and after treatment，the scores of pain and function of knee joint in Hospital for Special Surgery(HSS) in the two groups were compared； the changes in levels of interleukin-1β(IL-1β)，tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and matrix metalloproteinase-13(MMP-13) in knee joint fluid in the two groups were observed. After treatment， the total clinical effect in the two groups was compared. Results： The total effective rate was 88.89% in the treatment group and 68.89% in the control group，the difference being significant(P＜0.05). After treatment，the scores of pain and function of knee joint in HSS in the two groups were increased when compared with those before treatment(P＜0.05)，and the two scores in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group(P＜ 0.05). After treatment，the levels of IL-1β，TNF-α and MMP-13 in inflammatory factors in synovial fluid in the two groups were significantly decreased when compared with those before treatment(P＜0.05)，and the indexes in the treatment group were significantly lower than those in the control group(P＜0.05). Conclusion：The therapy of sodium hyaluronate for intraarticular injection combined with Haitongpi tang for KOA can effectively reduce the levels of inflammatory factors in synovial fluid，relieve joint pain and improve knee joint function，whose curative effect is better than that of simple western medicine.
