The authors elaborated the correlation between the anatomy，physiology and pathology of thoroughfare vessel and gastroesophageal variceal bleeding in liver cirrhosis and proposed the corresponding treatmentmethod.According to this method，hemostasis should be m ainly used in the acute phase，prim arily cooling and reducing yangming so as to stop the reversed qi；strengthening the foundation should be applied in the remission stage，reinforcing kidney，calming liver and m aking stom ach qi descend so as to resume the norm al condition of thoroughfare vessel and m ake peace in blood and qi.Practitioners can improve the clinicaleffect of gastroesophagealvaricealbleeding in liver cirrhosis by refining the understanding of Chinese medicine on different etiologies of upper gastrointestinalbleeding.
