Liver damage is a common complication for systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)with insidious onset, which only manifests in abnormality of laboratory indexes for some patients.Consequently, the disease did not gain enough attention.Based on the theory of Chinese medicine, the authors made a discussion of the etiology and pathogenesis as well as the diagnosis and treatment of SLE with liver damage. The authors thought that the root of the disease was defiency, while symptom presented as depression.Accompanied by disharmony of qi and blood, stagnation of stasis toxin, intermingled deficiency and excess, the disease occured.Treatment for the disease should attach importance to both the root cause and the symptoms, take reinforcing healthy qi and dispelling pathogenic qi as the key link, as well as emphasize on soothing the liver and regulating qi.Thus, therapies of resolving toxins, dispelling stasis and enriching yin should be applied. With the intervention of Chinese medicine, integrated Chinese and western medicine therapy is hopeful to enhance its clinical effect on SLE with liver damage.
