Abstract: Objective: To study the distribution rules of the six- meridian constitutions of Chinese medicine in different age groups;to explore the relationship between the six-meridian constitutions, age and early type 2 diabetes. Methods: The constitution- based syndrome differentiation was set up by the major project of discipline research of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, namely “Discussion on Type 2 Diabetes and the Susceptibility to Its Complications Based on Six-Meridian Constitutions,Birthday and Five Phase” carried out by Professor LIU Min. The constitution- based syndrome differentiation was used to investigate the distribution of six-meridian constitutions in patients with early type 2 diabetes at all ages, and the results were statistically analyzed. Results:A total of 151 patients with early type 2 diabetes were included in this study, including 24 cases (16% ) in the young adult group, 67 cases (44% ) in the middle-aged group, and 60 cases (40%) in the elderly group. The distribution of six-meridian constitutions in the young adult group was ranked from highest to lowest frequency: 15 cases of the yangming constitution (62.5%), 4 cases of taiyang constitution (16.7%), 1 case of shaoyang constitution (4.2%), 1 case of jueyin constitution (4.2%),1 case of taiyin constitution (4.2%),and 1 case of shaoyin constitution (4.2%). The distribution of six-meridian constitutions in the middle-aged group was ranked from highest to lowest frequency: 29 cases of the yangming constitution (43.2% ), 9 cases of taiyang constitution (13.4%), 7 cases of shaoyang constitution (10.4%), 5 cases of taiyin constitution (7.4%), 5 cases of jueyin constitution (7.4% ), and 2 case of shaoyin constitution (2.9% ). The distribution of six- meridian constitutions in the elderly group was ranked from highest to lowest frequency:24 cases of the yangming constitution (40.0%),9 cases of taiyang constitution (15.0%),7 cases of shaoyang constitution (11.6%), 6 cases of shaoyin constitution (10.0% ), 2 cases of jueyin constitution (3.3% ), and 1 case of taiyin constitution (1.6%). The comparison of the distribution of the six- meridian constitutions among the three groups showed significance in the difference (P<0.05). Conclusion:The yangming constitution is the most distributed constitution of all ages, and the proportion of yangming constitution shows a decreasing trend with age, while the proportions of shaoyang constitution and shaoyin constitution show an increasing trend with age.
